The TFO Tactics for Air Support – Certification Series, primarily offered at the Tactical Flying Training Center, is a comprehensive, progressive training program designed to directly complement and fulfill key portions of the Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) Training and Currency Standardization.
Delivered by experienced law enforcement aviation instructors, this certification series equips TFOs with the tactical, technical, and operational skills required for safe and effective airborne mission support. Structured across three levels—Level 1 (beginner), Level 2 (intermediate), and Level 3 (advanced)—the series builds sequentially to mirror the standards’ emphasis on foundational knowledge before progressing to higher levels of proficiency.
Level 1 (Basic): Foundational proficiency in suspect apprehension principles, sensor operations, aircraft/crew safety, and patrol support—ideal for new or below-100-hour TFOs.
Level 1 (Basic) covers core fundamentals, including ground instruction in suspect apprehension basics, sensor operations, and introductory airborne tactics. This level satisfies the required 16–24 hours of ground instruction and supports the initial daytime flight phase outlined in TFO training and currency standards.
Level 2 (Intermediate): Advanced instruction emphasizing night operations, infrared sensor mastery, contingency planning, and enhanced airborne search tactics for experienced operators.
After building approximately 100 hours of flight experience, operators may progress to Level 2. This course emphasizes night operations, infrared sensor employment, contingency planning, and advanced search techniques—directly supporting the 16-hour night phase and recurrent tactical training requirements.
Level 3 (Master): Expert-level in-flight training for highly experienced operators, focused on advanced proficiency, documented currency, and meeting the highest operational standards.
Operators with 250+ hours of mission experience receive structured in-flight training, documented flight hours toward currency, and a Level 3 certification upon completion. This level enhances proficiency, reduces liability, and ensures TFOs meet or exceed the rigorous standards for selection, initial training, and ongoing competency.
