Kevin Means
FOUNDER
Kevin Means was a helicopter crewman in the U.S. Navy and has been a San Diego police officer since 1982. He has worked as a patrol officer, an undercover narcotics detective and gang detective. Kevin has been assigned to the Air Support Unit as a pilot and tactical flight officer for more than 20 years and has acquired nearly 12,000 hours of flight time, including 1,100 hours of night vision goggle pilot-in-command time. He was the unit’s helicopter training officer and NVG check-airman, and is a FAA certified flight instructor in airplanes and helicopters with a night vision goggle instructor endorsement.
Kevin Means was a regional director and past president of the Airborne Law Enforcement Association, and created the Airborne Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission – a non-profit organization, whose purpose is to draft professional standards for the airborne law enforcement industry.
Kevin has written several articles for many publications about airborne law enforcement tactics and safety, and his book, “Tactical Helicopter Missions – How to Fly Safe, Effective Airborne Law Enforcement Missions” is used in an aviation college as their text book for airborne law enforcement training.
He was awarded the prestigious ALEA Robert L. Cormier award in 2009 in recognition of excellence, accomplishments and leadership qualities in the airborne law enforcement profession. Kevin has also won several awards for thermal imaging missions that resulted in the successful apprehension of suspects.
Kevin Means is a California POST certified instructor (Police Officer Standards of Training) and created a POST certified thermal imaging course that has been taught throughout the U.S. and abroad.
